Madalyn Harken, a Riceville native and graduate, has joined the Osage Vet Clinic team as a veterinary technician.

Harken, 22, said she is looking forward to expanding her knowledge with Dr. Nathan Bye and the rest of the clinic’s team.

After graduating from Riceville, Harken attended the Northeast Iowa Community College, where she obtained a two-year vet tech degree, which she graduated with in August of this year.

She said the hardest part of getting her degree was commuting an hour one way from Riceville to NICC, and managing the heavy work load of her classes.

“It’s kind of an accelerated program, similar to a nursing program,” Harken said. The vet tech started to get animal experience through high school programs like 4H, and the rodeo, followed by working in a farrowing unit at Iowa Select Farms after high school. In passing conversation at an appointment at the Osage Vet Clinic, Harken mentioned to Dr. Bye that she was looking for a veterinary internship to wrap up her schooling; the vet tech soon joined the team as an intern from April to May, and then an accepted a full-time position at the clinic in July.

Dr. Bye told Enterprise Journal that he is excited to have Harken join his staff.

“I am looking forward to putting my knowledge from school to use,” said Harken. She lives in Riceville with her husband and their three-year-old daughter. “Growing up, I always wanted to be a vet, and always wanted to know the ‘why’ behind everything. Why [animals] do the things that they do.”
