MANLY — Running determined races, Riceville’s Claire Zweibohmer and St. Ansgar’s Lila Powers finished 13th and 15th, respectively, within a handful of spots from a place in the Class 1A state cross country meet at Pioneer Town & Country Golf Course in the state qualifier.

Zweibohmer ran a personal best 21 minutes, 39.86 seconds, less than a minute behind the 10th-place finisher who was the final individual to head to Fort Dodge’s Kennedy Park this week for state.

“To get 10th place and keep pushing,” Zweibohmer said of her strategy. “Push myself until I can’t.”

Around the mile mark, Powers had a small lead on Zweibohmer, but shortly after that the Wildcat pushed ahead. She said she knew what her place was throughout the race. Powers was 12th in team scoring for the Saints.

“Yes, I did,” Zweibohmer admitted. “It hurts at the end, but I guess I got a PR, so that’s pretty good, by a minute.”
