DES MOINES — From joy to determination, Saint Riley Witt started his final Class 1A state track meet with a title and ended with another, adding a pair of runner-up finishes in between.

He had to take some time in between the races to get his mental state arranged, but Witt had a great contrast of looks upon his face from his first race win to his last.

“Positivity wasn’t there,” Witt said. “I didn’t run that race out of joy. I didn’t want to run the race because I liked it. I was running it out of spite, probably not a great mental state to run it in, but that’s what it was.

“Joy to determination.”
