ST. ANSGAR — Saying that the St. Ansgar girls’ basketball team has improved from the first game of the season may be an understatement.

The Saints got revenge on Top of Iowa East Conference foe Central Springs in scoring a 45-34 win over the Panthers to improve to 8-3 overall, 7-1 in the conference.

Madison Hillman, coming off of a school record rebounds in a game with 21 added another double-double, officially with 20 points and 18 rebounds in the victory.

“The first time we played them, the big thing was the only people who looked to score were Madison and Adri (Kruse),”  coach Scott Cakerice said. “Tonight, Addison Tabbert looked to score, Aspen (Falk) looked to score, Kinsey (Anderson) looked to score. They all understand, ‘I can do that, too.’ That makes us better.

“They don’t always go in, but that’s okay, but at least they are looking. They miss, we go rebound.”

It was a far cry from the 29-23 loss on Nov. 30, 2021.

“Got us the first game of the year,” Cakerice said. “I would say they are better now because of their freshman Kaci Crumm. She’s not a bad ball player, she keeps working, she’s going to be really good by the time she’s done. We’re better, too. I was pleased with the girls, especially in the first half. The girls came out and jumped on it. Got two quarters tonight, next time three, and then four.”
