Whole new year, same Saints

SHEFFIELD — It may be a brand new year, but St. Ansgar has started the 2024 season much like it did in 2023.

Coach Devin Schwiesow’s Saints are among the top teams in the Top of Iowa East Conference and boast a 7-1 overall, 4-0 conference following an 8-0 victory over West Fork on Friday, May 31.

Gus Walk went the distance while striking out 12 Warhawk batters. He scattered a pair of hits and walked three to go to 1-0.

“Our pitching has been really good,” coach Schwiesow said. “I think our catching – our battery has been really good for us with a lot of different guys, and that’s kept us in ball games.

“Offensively, we need to get better to wins games. Tonight, we left a small village on base, and we didn’t come up with the big hit. That’s the first time we have saw slower pitching.”
