Missing pieces: Coach, player out for Saints as Osage rolls

By Kristi Nixon

OSAGE — As if St. Ansgar didn’t come into this Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball as underdogs, the Saints were also without head coach Bret Williams and senior first man off the bench, Griffin Carlson.

Williams was out with illness and Carlson rolled his ankle in the Saints’ game against North Iowa on Jan. 13.

“A little under the weather,” assistant coach Logan Zipse said of Williams. “Sounds like he will be back for practice tomorrow. And we’ve got some guys banged up. That’s the nature of the beast, I guess.”

And Osage got a big contribution from its freshman Madden Uhlenhopp off the bench, hitting five three-pointers in the first half alone on the way to a game-high 17 points as the Green Devils ran out to a 69-39 win on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

“That is something we see in practice,” coach Mike Brahn said of Uhlenhopp. That kind of confidence, his ability is coming. It’s that point in the year when freshmen are not freshmen anymore when he played as much as he has. A part of everything we’re doing, shoot the ball in big-time situations and he’s stepped up and done a good job for us.”
