FORT DODGE — Scarlett Byrnes’ favorite number is 10 for so many reasons.

“Well, I was born on the 10th of October, which is the 10th month of the year, and I was born at 10:10 at night,” Byrnes said. “And I weighed 10 pounds. And I got 10th place. Sometimes, I get something with the No. 10 that is not so lucky, but it’s a number I seem to get a lot, I guess.”

A 10th-place finish in the Class 2A girls’ state cross country meet on Saturday, Oct. 28 seemed more than appropriate for the Osage sophomore, who completed the race in a personal best 19 minutes, 8.9 seconds.

A huge contingent of family, wearing sweatshirts that read, “Byrnes Clan” arrived to cheer on the runner, who was ranked 11th in 2A going in.

“I didn’t know all of them were coming, so when I heard their voices shouting, ‘Scarlett!’ I looked over and thought, ‘Oh, I didn’t know they were here!’” she said. “It was a big surprise.”
