Rivals on the court, shooting for a cause

ST. ANSGAR — As bad as St. Ansgar’s girls’ basketball team wants to beat Osage on the court, the Saints made the kindest of gestures toward Green Devil head man Chad Erickson and his family.

A few weeks ago, coach Scott Cakerice’s Saints organized a fundraiser in order to donate toward Erickson after he and his family lost their home to a house fire in early November.

“When it happened, we talked to the girls to see if they wanted to do a fundraiser for coach Erickson,” Cakerice said. “No hesitation: ‘Yes.’ They bought into it, wanted to do it.”

The Saints raised $2,400 by shooting free throws for the cause.

“We came up for the idea for free throws because we’ve done that in the past,” Cakerice said. “Over Christmas break (last year), we did free throws for the children’s hospital in Iowa City; the money would go there. We said, ‘No, we want to do this for coach (Erickson) this year.’

“And they raised $2,400, which is really awesome.”

Erickson added, “I have a lot of respect for coach Cakerice and his team. The free throw fundraiser was much appreciated and meant a lot to my family.”
