The folks of St. Ansgar will be seeing South Square in a new light from now on, as a grant and donations have given the community square a batch of new LED lights and microphones.

A $5,000 dollar grant was given to South Square by the Iowa Arts Council and the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, and private donations were given to match.

“In the past year and a half, South Square has been proud to present a number of special events,” said Tyler McKinley, of the South Square Board of Directors. “For each, we’ve had to beg and borrow lights and microphones.

“Today we’re excited to announce that thanks to a $5,000 arts equipment grant, matched by private donations, we are now equipped with 17 new LED stage lights.”

Tom Crowley donated a number of wireless microphones to the cause as well.

“We’re excited to have these critical pieces of equiptment in place and look forward to many years of events within the community,” McKinley said.

In addition to getting the 17 stage lights, South Square now has a programmable control board to go along with it, and a sound board for the microphones.

An “improvised tech crew” helped put the new equiptment into place, which consisted of Tom Crowley, Bryan McKinley, John Pahl, Alex Schmidt, Anthony Walk and Wes DeMaris.

“Thank you to the Iowa Arts Council and the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs,  our donors and volunteers for their generous support,” McKinley said.
