Glad to be there: golfers happy for good weather

GREENE — If you ask Osage’s Leo Klapperich, the overall meet co-medalist at Round Grove Golf & Country Club, he was happy to get in a good day to golf at last.

His even-par 36 on the Greene course tied with North Butler’s Mitchell Staudt as he led the Green Devils to a runner-up finish by one stroke behind the host school, 164-165.

“Last week, Thursday, we played at Northwood – that was nice but not as nice as this,” Klapperich said. “It was nice to play something warm out and good conditions. Really good, you can swing more freely, don’t have to worry about whether you are cold or anything like this. You can definitely shoot better, so this is good to have a warm day.”

The day brought a high in the low 60s with sunny skies and very little wind, a rarity indeed for north Iowa this spring season. Originally a triangular, the meet included five boys’ teams and four girls’ teams due to weather postponements so far.

For St. Ansgar’s No. 1 girls’ golfer, Annika Hemann, she was glad to get outside at all. She was playing in only her second meet of all of 2022 and has not yet practiced outdoors.

She shot 60 to tie for sixth overall as the Saints were runners-up to Northwood-Kensett, 235-259.

“Definitely, really beautiful outside,” Hemann said of the uncommon conditions this season. “We haven’t had it in a while. It’s nice to get out on the course. Considering this is only my second course golfing this season, pretty good.”
