Saint doesn’t let diabetes slow him down

MANLY — St. Ansgar’s Lucan Knutson may not be among the front pack in cross country races, but you may notice him if you’re looking.

He wears an insulin monitor patch on his left arm.

The junior for the Saints has Type 1 diabetes but isn’t letting that affect him while competing for coach Keely Schwiesow’s team.

“I have this (indicating the patch on his arm),” Knutson said. “It monitors my blood sugar, which connects to an insulin pump that I have in my pocket through here (indicating a line). I just run with it. It helps me monitor . . . it has different modes, and I put it on exercise activity. It doesn’t give me as much insulin (then). It keeps me within the range that I need to be in.”
