Played under less-than-ideal conditions – non-stop rain with varying intensity all night long – which was more suited to the TigerHawks’ style of game, it meant an uphill battle for coach Chris Kyhl’s team.

Even though NFV was 1-3, it had played a tough schedule thus far, including a loss to a Class 3A Independence team that was previously ranked and is still receiving votes, as well as to a 4-1 Sumner-Fredericksburg team that just pulled off an upset of Class 1A No. 2 MFL, MarMac, also on Friday night. The TigerHawks also lost to Class 1A No. 5 Denver.

“We knew they were a lot better than their record,” Kyhl said. “We knew they were a very young football team, and they played three quality teams in non-district and then, when we saw the forecast, we were like, ‘Okay, that plays more into their style and how they want to play.’ So, we knew we were going to get a battle…”
