Saints D looks to tighten up heading into week 3

The Saints football squad will have their heads held high as they go into their week 3 match against Starmont this week.

The running game is clicking, the defense has shown flashes of dominance, and oh yeah, they just beat that other team a few miles down the road. 

St. Ansgar knocked off rival Osage last Friday, jumping out to a 24-point lead after the 3rd quarter. The Saints held on to win despite a late charge by the Green Devils, out-pacing them by a final score of 42-32.

St. Ansgar racked up 429 yards of offense with 382 yards rushing and 47 yards passing. Defensively, the Saints held Osage to 19 yards rushing and 283 yards of total offense.

With the victory, the Saints retook possession of the L.R. Falk traveling trophy for the seventh time in the past 10 meetings.

Osage’s defenders looked like a bunch of blind maids trying to fold a fitted sheet whenever they attempted to tackle senior Jack Sievert – the Saints running back piled up 3 touchdowns and an impressive 272 yards on the ground, the fourth-most in school history.

Junior Ryan Cole made a pair of spectacular grabs on key fourth downs for the Saints. The first came on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Cade Duckert to put the Saints on the board in the 1st. The second was 21-yard snag in the 3rd quarter where Cole made a spectacular dive to reel in the ball and extend the drive.

Ball-control was key in the Saints’ victory. The big boys up front paved the way for Sievert’s big night and made it nearly impossible for the Osage defense to get off the field during the second and third quarters — the Saints ran 77 plays on offense compared to Osage’s 43.  St. Ansgar also racked up 429 yards of offense with 382 yards rushing and 47 yards passing.

Defensively, the Saints held Osage to 19 yards rushing and 283 yards of total offense.

St. Ansgar’s defense was much more stingy than the 32-points they allowed indicates. Osage struggled all night to find consistency on offense, and only scored when they were able to eke-out big plays — three of Osage’s five touchdowns were plays of 70-yards or more.

The Saints should have a good opportunity to tune things up this week, as they host a struggling Starmont squad that has yet to score a touchdown this season and has given up 93 points in their first two contests.

Kick-off is set to take place at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
