Saints claim sixth in second-ever state golf appearance

AMES — Every single member of the St. Ansgar girls golf team improved on the first-day score down to the key fifth golfer to post a sixth-place team finish.br

Coach Shannon Belz’s team scored a two-day team total of 787, which initially tied the Saints with Newell-Fonda. However, the tiebreak was won by St. Ansgar by virtue of fifth scorer Taylor Vervaecke.

“Our goal for today was for everyone to come up three strokes better,” Belz said, “and we for sure did that. We had some personal bests today and couldn’t ask for a better day to get those, so that was huge.”

Belz added that the 386 on Wednesday was a record for the season by 10 strokes.

“It’s 10 strokes better than what we’ve done,” Belz said. “Best for us this year and a lot of years. Great effort by the girls. Couldn’t have asked for any better. We came up a smidgen short of what we hoped for today, but to get here was great in itself.”

Kirsten Boerjan improved by a pair of strokes for 88, tied for 13th overall. Annika Hemann, a junior, improved by six strokes with a 97 on the second day.
