Osage claims trapshooting title

ACKLEY — The Osage trapshooting team aimed to take Stockdale Gun Club in Ackley by storm.

The Green Devils did just that, winning the state title on Saturday of last week with a score of 467.

“We did good,” Osage coach Larry Johnson said. “We competed against pretty much everyone we had in the area with the exception of Okoboji. It was a good day.”

On the team were Andrew Thyer, Ben Popp with 95, who also recently shot 100 straight at Mason City and received a plaque for it, something Johnson said only a handful of shooters ever do; Matthew Abben, Alexa Thyer, who was the overall female scorer with 93 and Jack Sparrow at 95, who is a first year shooter for the Green Devils.

“That’s all he does,” Osage coach Larry Johnson said. “He had an exceptional day and beat one of our top shooters.”

Johnson also gave credit to all of his assistant coaches: Tom Beyer, Larry Clark, Rod Koch, Calvin Thyer, Steve Abben and his wife, Lynda, who he called ‘Pint.’

The trap team held a ceremony at the Mitchell County Trap Range on Sunday, June 6.

Johnson attributed the team win to luck, with a chuckle.

It qualified the Osage team for the national meet in Michigan starting on July 6.

The varsity male winners of the meet were out of Northwood-Kensett, Collin Houg, and second was Haydan Pestorious, a seventh-grader, who Johnson called an exceptional shooter, with 96.

Northwood-Kensett was second in the team scoring (463) and Lake Mills finished third (457).
