The Osage sophomore runner topped off a two-win week with a big victory by less than a tenth of a second over the Class 1A No. 4 rated runner, Kadence Huck, at the Bulldog Invitational, held at scenic Maynes Grove south of Hampton.

Byrnes, herself ranked No. 10 in 2A, used a strategy of shadowing the Nashua-Plainfield junior, who has topped her a few times in races during the course of the season.

“It was really close,” Byrnes said. “The times came out and I was about point-one ahead of her.”

She crossed the line in 19:25.99 while Huck’s official time was 19:26.07. Byrnes led the Green Devils to a runner-up team finish behind Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, which swept the team titles at Maynes Grove with the boys’ team turning in the top-four finishes in that portion of the meet.

The course was to Byrnes’ liking, although it does have its drawbacks.

“I’ve been running this course since middle school, and I’ve always thought it was super-pretty, and I’ve always loved it,” Byrnes said. “I know it’s not like a super-fast course….”
