JANESVILLE — Despite a slow start, the Riceville boys basketball team took a lead four minutes into this Iowa Star North basketball game that held until the end of the third quarter.

Janesville rallied behind teammate 6-foot-7 Gabe Meaney, who went out of the game while being blocked for what was called a jump ball in the first half with an apparent ankle injury. The junior remained on the bench in the first half in obvious pain, but left to be taken for X-rays at halftime. At the time of his injury, he’d already scored five points and tallied six rebounds while using his size.

The home Wildcats won, 56-47.

“End of the second quarter, when he got hurt,” Riceville coach Matt Schwade said, “they rallied behind his injury, and we let their physicality and pushing get to us, and we checked out mentally.”
