SHEFFIELD — The St. Ansgar boys golf team opened the season by finishing second of three teams at the West Fork home meet on a blustery Thursday, April 4, day at Ridge Stone Golf Course.

While the host school won with the four lowest scores on the day and a 171 score, coach Shannon Belz’s Saints edged Mason City Newman by a stroke, 208-209.

“I think it was a good start,” Belz said. “I know the boys learned early in their rounds that sometimes they need to abandon a club (driver) if it isn’t working and get something out that they can control.”

Chase Haugen had the low score for the Saints with a 47, which Belz said was a highlight. Rounding out team scoring were Jaxson Vroom (53), Griffin Haugen (54) and Hudson Sparrow (54).

“Looking at their scorecards, they all had a good stretch of holes, it’s just the bad ones were bad,” Belz said. “Nothing we can’t learn from and move forward.”
