ST. ANSGAR — On a night in which the Saint senior wrestlers were honored, an eye opening performance came from a wrestlers who was putting on a singlet in action for the very first time in his career.

Junior 190-pounder Drew Carlson, out for the sport for the first time ever, looked like he has been doing it for a while in going 2-1, including a forfeit, and gave his opponent from West Hancock everything he had in a 9-6 loss by decision as coach Barry Kittleson’s St. Ansgar team started the season 2-1 in Top of Iowa Conference action.

Kittleson said he was informed Carlson was coming out for the sport, but didn’t know what to expect.

“He looked pretty good, didn’t he?” Kittleson said. “Yeah, I said after the West Hancock match, if he’d have wrestled two matches before this, he’d have won.

“He’s kind of got the natural feeling of it. I could see that in practice, but yeah, does a good job – gave it everything he had. I did (know he was coming) because I see his mother at Grain Miller’s every day. She told me he was coming out. I had no idea. I said, ‘Well, it won’t be easy.’”
