DES MOINES — As soon as Riceville’s Class 1A third-ranked 160-pounder Lawson Losee won his opening match, he pointed to three block letters tattooed on his right upper thigh.

RHP.

When asked about it, Losee chose to decline to say what it signifies until a state title is in hand.

“I probably shouldn’t say what it means,” Losee said after his 18-3 technical fall over Dyersville Beckman’s Conner Grover. “It has a lot of meaning to me, but I want to keep it a secret. Coach introduced it to me from Osage and it stuck with me, so I had it tattooed on my body. It’s a good meaning, I just want to keep it to myself.

“If I win a state title, I’ll share it.”

He was well on his way into Friday night after a 3-2 win over Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Molyneux in the quarterfinal.

The past three weekends, he’s had to wrestle the top-ranked and defending state champion out of Waterloo Columbus, Maximus Magayna. Losee is prepared to face him one more time.

He’ll take on second-ranked Cullen Koedam of West Sioux. Although he’s not looking past Koedam, Losee has in mind what he will do against Magayna.

“I’ve wrestled him three times this year. We know each other, but I just have to take it one match at a time and hopefully, I’ll be in the final,” Losee said. “That’s the plan. He’s a good kid. I’d say he beat me in one position and that turned the match. I have stuff to counter that, so I’m feeling good. I’m ready for him.”
