Throwing it all out there

DES MOINES — Two of the three area track and field Drake Relays representatives were throwers, with both Ericka Power of Osage and St. Ansgar’s Ryan Hackbart not reaching the final out of the first flight in the discus and shot put, respectively, on Thursday April 27.

Power, who earned the final spot in the prestigious meet in its 113th running, finished 24th out of the 24 competitors in the field.

“It was fun,” Power said. “There wasn’t a ton of stress. I was relaxed.”

After going out of bounds on her first two discus efforts, Power was focused on getting one good one in, doing so with an effort of 105 feet even.

“I just stayed calm,” Power said. “Listen to what my coach says because she knows it all. And it would be okay. It (the throw) wasn’t great, but I’m just glad I got one in. It wasn’t my best.”
