Playoff-bound Saints trounce Lake Mills

ST. ANSGAR — Making its 22nd overall postseason appearance, the St. Ansgar football team will travel to Wapsie Valley, Fairbank this Friday night after solidifying a 54-6 rout of Lake Mills on Friday, Oct. 14.

When asked if it ever gets old, junior linebacker Christian Michels simply smiled and said, ‘No.’

“It doesn’t,” Michels admitted. “(Preparing will be) Nothing different, just keep trying to get better week by week. Everybody is 0-0 starting this week.”

After the announcement came through that the Saints, a road team since it finished third with a 5-3 overall record, 3-2 in Class A District 3, was heading to Fairbank against the 6-2 Warriors, Head Coach Drew Clevenger said he figured that would be the team’s opponent.

“They are a traditional power and always very well-coached,” Clevenger said of Wapsie. “We haven’t played them since 2016 in the playoffs, but they look similar in terms of scheme to what they were doing back then. They are balanced offensively and a very good defensive team.

“We will have to be at our best this week. Our kids are looking forward to the challenge.”
