ST. ANSGAR — As close as could be a year ago, the St. Ansgar girls track and field team left no doubt to winning the Top of Iowa East Conference team title in 2024, topping second place Northwood-Kensett by 70 points (177-107) at home on Thursday, May 2.

Among the winners for coach Phil Baldus’ team, who was also named the girls coach of the year, included the sprint medley, 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 relays, Lindsey Kruse in the discus and Mariah Michels in the long jump.

The Saint girls have won all but one of the nine meets they have competed in this season.

“What more can I say?” Baldus said. “They have been doing great things right out of the gate when we started with some indoor meets. It’s the end of the season, so we hope their best performances should be happening, and last night they did for many of the kids.

“Coach (Keely) Schwiesow and I go through the meet with the kids and what type of expectations we have for them. Last night, they met almost every one of those expectations and exceeded in a couple of others. As coaches, we were really excited for them to win the Top of Iowa Conference track meet.”
