ST. ANSGAR — It has been a while since the St. Ansgar boys’ basketball team earned consecutive wins, but the Saints never trailed in a 46-41 victory over Nashua-Plainfield on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Co-coaches Jason Squier and Eric Kline’s team started the game on an 8-0 run which had the Huskies in a hole right away, and a three-pointer by Tucker Franzen to tie the game at 20 at the start of the second half was the only time the game was knotted.

After that initial tie, Tyke Remster nailed back-to-back threes for the Saints and Ryan Hackbart, who led St. Ansgar with 13 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double that had the home team ahead 28-20 in a matter of a few minutes.

“If we can keep our cushion and maintain it,” Squier said, “that’s okay. It’s part of the learning process.”

Kline added, “It’s not good for our blood pressure, but we got the win.”

Even though the Saints were holding on to the close lead, they were not getting the foul calls they felt they earned until the final minute.

“Big thing we tell them is you’ve got to play through contact,” Squier said. “The calls don’t always come when you want, but that’s part of the game, and we keep telling them, ‘Keep playing, keep playing, keep playing.’ It will take care of itself. What a team effort…”
